Creating No-Idling Zones On 12th July the students of St. Mary's School Dwarka created a no idling zone around their school campus by campaigning and creating awareness amongst   the bus drivers, parents and students by talking to them. The students of class IX and X created posters regarding how important it was to practice this to reduce environmental pollution and conserve the resources for the coming future generations. No idling zones promote switching or unloading the vehicles when they come to a long halt. The students enthusiastically participated in the campaign and acknowledged that loading and unloading the vehicle may take a few extra seconds but would save the future generations from struggling to acquire the resources for their utilisation. The campaigners were ecstatic to impact multiple minds and rightfully stood up to “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” as quoted by Mahatma Gandhi .

Vermicomposting is one of the effective biological method for waste management in which microbes assist earthworm in waste degradation. St. Mary’s School, Dwarka, a green school focuses and inculcates the core values of sustainable development and sustainable living. With a goal to spread this value, the Eco-Club students of Std. VIII, under the supervision of their teacher prepared vermicompost pile from leaf litter for managing waste. The students then made use of the compost as manure for the school garden and organic kitchen garden. The decomposed leaf-litter for managing waste without burning it contains water soluble nutrients and is a good nutrient rich organic fertilizer. This practice helps us to understand as how waste (leaf-litter) can be managed and converted into a good nutrient-rich organic fertiliser and promote sustainable living practice.

Image
Air pollution is a major threat in today’s world. As we look around, we see fumes, smoke and toxic gases being released from vehicles, factories   and different human activities like burning coal, plastics etc . Just being an onlooker will not get us to the solution but to act is the only option. Air pollution is a silent killer. It may lead to many diseases specially in kids and elderly people. The best way to reduce air pollution is to increase the supply of oxygen into the atmosphere. And this is only possible by planting more and more trees. We at St. Mary’s School, Dwarka are always enthusiastic about nurturing the environment. In another effort to do our part and sensitise students about the ill effect of air pollution and importance of planting trees there was an initiative to educate them about these issues.
