Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

-Happiness brings the feeling of contentment, what goes inside is what determines your wellness.

Good health and well being stands for being content with how one manages their overall life. It is divided into two parts, one being mental health and the other being physical. Both of these are essential factors for leading a successful life. They may not always have a balance as life is never linear but there is always room for improvement in to what we are doing.

Both aspects can be focused on in co-ordination with proper planning and can be elaborated accordingly:-

1.    Mental Health- It refers to one’s emotional, psychological well-being. It goes on a certain individual’s feelings. It can greatly take a toll on a person regardless of them being physically active and fit as for the mind is what plans out everything our body does, which if affected can lead to problems in daily life. It is often neglected to how one feels due to lack of awareness, or either due to more focus on other daily activities. One of the 169 targets of the SDG by the UN is to promote mental health.

·       Our school, St.Mary’s has taken actions regarding this, it has organized workshops and webinars regarding certain topics which are focused more on teenagers and how they adapt to changes in themselves during the period of adolescence.

·       Another one of the targets of the SDG by the UN refers to prevent and treat substance abuse, this is a common situation (especially for teens) which takes place in our surroundings as some people’s mental health declines rapidly to a point where they resort to drugs. Our school has also taken an initiative for students and teachers to take a pledge, “Say no to drugs, Yes to life”.

We as certain individuals can check up on not only our loved ones, but also other people we are surrounded by. Let’s take an initiative to ask them about their mental health, as for we never know the battles which anyone of us might be fighting in our own heads.

2.Physical Health- It refers to one’s physical fitness and how they maintain their daily schedule, such as eating well, exercising, staying hydrated, getting proper sleep depending on the need. It also depends on one’s surroundings, living in a proper environment full of greenery and cleanliness is an important factor as it is less likely for diseases communicable or not to be in contact of the person.

St. Mary’s has taken a number of initiatives to maintain the above mentioned such as:-

·       Organized a team of students “Code Green” with teachers involved to create awareness and take actions such as making PPTS to showcase it to students.

·       Collecting waste, recycling it then further reusing it hence following the three R’s.

·       Encouraging students to take part in events such as the SDG dialogue series

·       Using solar panels and having the set up of a wastewater treatment plant.

·       Creating events of its own such as “Recyclable Trash Collection” by collecting recyclable trash and deposit.

·       Having a tobacco free zone on the entire campus

·       Conducted interviews with students regarding their knowledge about the topic

·       Given inputs about the same in the School Holiday Homework

This is just a beginning which has many more steps and further actions to take place. It marks the journey of a great future ahead of us.

-Taking a stand is what rises a leader, a change is necessary for the others to become wiser.
